I do hope that that is a former ventilation shaft of Woodhead Tunnel on your photo, since that is a 1940/50s electric locomotive of a sort only ever used on the Woodhead route from Manchester-Sheff. They lasted into the 70's (maybe the early 80s) but got the chop along with the route itself. Would be a damn useful line now, too. Amongst the more stupid line closures, really.
It is indeed from the Woodhead Tunnel, just above Dunford Bridge at the eastern end. Intriguingly, the tunnel was apparently considered as a possible conduit for one carriageway of the aborted M67.
News on a possible future for the tunnel from the Sheffield Star:
MINISTERS have come under pressure to protect the disused Woodhead tunnel rail route linking Sheffield to Manchester from sale to developers.
The Tories claim the trans-Pennine railway line should be saved because it could be a vital transport route in the future.
The expansion of Sheffield and Manchester could lead to the route once again becoming an important "transport corridor" between the two cities...
